Throughout the month of September The Artists' Gallery in Frederick, Maryland will feature work by Johan Lowie on DREAM or ALIVE and by James W. Germaux in DOUBLE VISION.
DREAM or ALIVE
New paintings by Johan Lowie, elaborates upon the theme of dream imagery: what we dream, how we think of dreams and the visions and fears we encounter during our state of sleep. The artist's deft handling of mood and atmosphere evokes a carefully constructed, delicious melancholy saved from despair by it's rich undercurrents of wit and irony and by it's austere discipline.
The title derives from the need to dream, also how dreams are used in our society. Lowie's paintings are rich with menace, shadow and gloom. There is a pulp fiction dose of artifice here that never verges on camp and a deliberate tension between this slightly ironic stylization and the dark, weighty atmosphere that suffuses many of his canvases.
DOUBLE VISION
Known for colorful abstract paintings, James W. Germaux shows work that continues to build upon that body of work. Suggestive of maps or arial views of landscapes, Germaux's paintings celebrate rich color and expressive line.
Germaux spent his youth in Pittsburgh and attended University of Pennsylvania graduating with a B.S. in Art Education. His work has been included in numerous juried shows. He has exhibited one man shows at The Artists' Gallery, The Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center, and Frederick Community College.
Alongside Germaux is his guest artist and nephew, Jon Page, from Raleigh, North Carolina. He is excited about his first photography show and delighted to be sharing the experience with his uncle. His nature work in Double Vision includes a piece that was awarded a first place in the Wildlife in North Carolina 2009 Photo Competition. His work features images captured in Switzerland, Costa Rica, Montana, and Colorado.
